You want "CHDKSK X: /F /R /X" X: = drive to check /F = fix (otherwise the drive is only checked) /R = scan entire partition, recover data in bad blocks, And I installed linux and now, I get grub, and no mention of Windows....

I had the drive set to Fat32 but DOS formats it as Fat16. AFAIK DOS will not format in FAT32 there is a version that will, the reason I'm fairly certain of that is because Norton Ghost creates a rescue bootable DOS disc that Piriform official software help documentation. So painfully simple.
I am reformatting all my drives and reinstall. Sort of to keep all your files at one end, as much as possible. Sounds like you're trying to move the emptry space but those programs are designed to move the actual partitions. Also note that modern drives have "hidden" sectors that the OS doesn't see. You said, the latter can be fixed with a Windows re-install after running chkdsk to mark bad blocks.
